In anticipation of my upcoming book, On War and Politics, which will be published October 15, 2016, I will be posting news and exclusive content here on my website. Please follow along for updates on the book and events, as well as my take on recent events in the national security and defense world and my insights on our armed forces, the Department of Defense, and a unique, historical perspective of some of the major issues we face today.
As a combat veteran from Vietnam and a father of two military officers, I know firsthand both the strengths and struggles of military service, on both the self and the family.
As a Senate staffer in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, I’ve witnessed the problems our defense establishment faces firsthand and worked my hardest, alongside Senator Sam Nunn, to tackle those problems. But some of them are still here to this day, just with a new face: the Goldwater-Nichols reforms the Senate and House Armed Services Committees are looking at today, women registering for the draft, acquisition cost overruns, and sexual assault in the military, just to name a few.
Today’s leaders are not tackling the tough problems and I intend to write about this as well.
